False in Some Sense
Edgar Michael Herman
Edgar Michael Herman grew up in Terra Lake, Indiana. Where his older sister was drawn to the sciences, he was drawn to the humanities. When he grew up, he became an English teacher and came back to his hometown to teach. Now, of course, he’s acting strangely, and a few lone nuts even claim they’ve seen him disappear and reappear, almost at will…
Of course, even that pales in comparison to the wildest claims. He’s alive. He’s dead. He’s insane. He’s a murderer. He’s skipped town with all these weirdoes hounding him.
As best as anyone can fathom — by her own admission, in fact — Lilith killed him. In her drug-addled state in the hospital, she wanted to help, so she smothered him with a pillow. Says he collapsed into a pile of stuff before she left.
If the rumors are true, that “stuff” was batteries and blown-out lightbulbs. And a chunk of depleted uranium the size of your fist.
Of course, that’s probably not the strangest part. He’s back, now. Said he came from a distant realm of alien creatures, and he returned just in time to save Elena’s life. He can’t go back to his old work — he looks to be twenty years older and is probably wanted for questioning, at the very least — but he has reunited with his friends and is forging a new life as James Mitchell Eliot.
